Bernadine D. Smith
Bernadine D. Holdridge was born on April 5, 1919, in Sac City, Iowa, the daughter of Raymond and Margaret (Klindt) Holdridge. She graduated from Sac City High School in 1937. On October 13, 1940, Bernadine was united in marriage to Alfred James Smith, in Sac City. They lived in Sac City until moving to Lake View in January of 1966. They were blessed with five children: Kathy, Karen, Jim, Jeff, and Jay. She was a member of the United Church of Christ at Lake View and belonged to the One Full Circle women’s group at church. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge and held several offices. In the spring of 1999 she moved to Des Moines and transferred her membership to the First Presbyterian Church in Grimes. Bernadine worked for the Singer Department Store in Sac City, and was a cook at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake for over 20 years, retiring in 1994. She loved to read and enjoyed playing the piano at several nursing homes and at church. Bernadine especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They were very important to her and she was very proud of them. Survivors include her children: Kathy (Earl) Lang, and Karen (Alan) Smith-McNeese all of Urbandale, IA, Jim (Barbara) Smith of Lake View, IA, Jeff (Diane) Smith of Boone, IA, and Jay Smith of Ankeny, IA; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; extended family, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Alfred; and a brother Donald Holdridge. Funeral service for Bernadine is Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at 11:00 a.m., at the United Church of Christ in Lake View, Iowa. Reverend Jerry Schultz will be officiating. J. Andy Meredith will accompany the congregation with special music. The honorary pallbearers include all of Bernadine’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery in Sac City. Arrangements provided by Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Lake View. Visitation for family and friends is also on Tuesday, prior to the funeral service, at 10:00 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Lake View. |
